Shipley's Choice gives Padonia scare in dual meet finale, settles for second

Shipley's Choice came within a whisker of bringing down the Central Maryland Swim League giant.

In its final dual meet over the weekend, Shipley's Choice (4-1) lost by six points to Padonia (5-0) to finish second in Division I for the second straight year. In winning its fifth straight division title and 11th in 14 years, Padonia had its closest call since losing to Crofton in 1989.

Trailing Padonia and Shipley's Choice were Hammond Park (2-2-1), Five Oaks (2-3), West Howard (1-4) and Crofton (0-4-1).

The other champions: Division II, Springdale (5-0); III, Forest Hill (4-1) and Glen Burnie Park (4-1); IV, Rollingwood (4-1) and Woodbridge Valley (5-1); V, Lochearn (5-0); VI, Watermont (5-0); VII, Southdown (5-0).

At the Straehle Invitational CMSL Individual Championships yesterday at Padonia, South Carroll's Jason Kay set the only league record, winning the 9-10 boys 50-meter free style in 30.98 seconds.

Yesterday's winners: Individual medley -- 9-10, Lorenz Ashley, Meadowbrook, and Justin Varbrough, Lochearn; 11-12, Elizabeth Lavell, Navy Juniors, and Joey Piekarski, West Howard; 13-14, Megan Melgaard, Chartwell, and Sky King, Springdale; 15-18, Lisa Webb, Five Oaks, and Rob Kinnear, Watermont.

Freestyle -- 8-and-under, Michelle Oswald, Padonia, and Michael Phelps, Meadowbrook; 9-10, Brittany List, Meadowbrook, and Jason Kay, South Carroll; 11-12, Lavell and Josh Mueller, Springdale; 13-14, Melgaard and Scott Shimkaveg, Roland Run; 15-18, Webb and Jeremy Sansbury, Wynnewood.

Backstroke -- 8-and-under, Oswald and Phelps; 9-10, Whitney Mershon, West Howard, and Kay; 11-12, Meaghan Harris, Shipley's Choice, and Nick Chester, Dulaney; 13-14, Melgaard and King; 15-18, Christie Jones, Glen Burnie Park, and Kinnear.
