Intruder found asleep on homeowner's couch

July 28, 1994

An Edgewater woman awoke at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday to find a man sleeping on her couch after apparently prying open a bedroom window and breaking in, county police said.

Kathleen Shanabrook Mellin, 35, told police that the man had put a picnic bench against the wall below a bedroom window, taken out the screen and pried open the window to get into her house in the 2200 block of Shore Drive. Once inside, he went to sleep on the couch, police reported, adding that the man broke part of the window frame when he pried it open.

The man was still asleep when Southern District officers arrived, police said. They escorted him out and arrested him, police said.

Wayne Curtis Ridgeway, 33, who police said has no fixed address, was charged with breaking and entering, trespassing and destruction of property, police said. Bail was set at $250, a spokeswoman for the district court said.
