3 bikes stolen in the night from cycle tour

July 28, 1994

Three mountain bikes being used in the Cycle Across Maryland Tour were stolen overnight Tuesday from the group's campgrounds at Old Mill Senior High School, county police said.

Scott Hutchinson, 39, told police that he went to bed around midnight and awoke at 4:45 a.m. yesterday and found that the bikes were missing, police said. Mr. Hutchinson had left the bikes unsecured outside his tent, police said.

Officers followed tire tracks in the wet grass to Lanny Court, but they lost the trail once the thieves reached pavement.

The bikes -- three Cannondales with green, purple and black handlebar ends -- belong to the Wheelers Not Dealers group in Washington, Mr. Hutchison told police. The value of the bikes was put at $1,500.
