Three charged in attack on 2 brothers after game

July 27, 1994

Howard County police have charged three Columbia men with assault with intent to murder and battery in an attack on two brothers in their Harpers Farm Village apartment after a soccer game last week.

Police arrested Rigoberto R. Cardona, 31; Oscar A. Arteaga, 25; and Fermine A. Garcia, 26, all of the 5900 block of Turnabout Lane in Wilde Lake Village.

Police were called at 4:20 a.m. July 19 to an apartment in the 5300 block of Harpers Farm Road. Sgt. Steve Keller, police department spokesman, said officers found Rene Amaya, 28, with lacerations to the head.

Mr. Amaya was treated at Howard County General Hospital and released.

His brother, Herman F. Amaya, 24, told police that the pair had been assaulted by three men with a club and a machete-type knife. The younger Amaya was not injured.

Sergeant Keller said the attack apparently stemmed from an argument in a soccer game between three men and the elder Amaya.

The three suspects are being held yesterday at the Howard County Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bail each.
