LAKE ORION, Mich. -- Tina Barrett of Baltimore was 1-over par yesterday in the first round of the U.S. Women's Open, finishing 34-3872 on the Indianwood Golf & Country Club course.

Barrett birdied two of the first three holes on putts of 15 and 12 feet, gave one back at the fourth, then bogeyed the 16th and 17th.

"I hit a lot of good shots. I think I played better than I scored," she said.

Williams shoots 72

Kim Williams birdied the first two holes, then had bogeys at the ninth, 12th, and 18th to finish with a 72.

"I thought I was right on the stick," she said of a 6-iron shot at the last hole that came up some 50 feet short. She then missed her par putt from six feet.

"I didn't hit it as well as I did before I took last week off," she said. "My timing is off because I haven't been able to practice as much as I need to [since being struck by a stray bullet nearly three weeks ago]. I need to get my confidence back."

Ingram feeling good

Sarah LeBrun Ingram said she was happy she hit it as well as she did (36-3874), because she had been struggling in recent weeks. "I feel really good about the way I'm playing," she said, despite finishing with a three-putt bogey from 60 feet at the last green.
