Fire marshal investigating motel blaze

The state fire marshal's office is investigating a one-alarm fire at the Boulevard Motel Wednesday night, which caused $5,000 in damage and drew 33 firefighters.

Investigators have not determined what caused the fire at the 12-unit motel in the 7400 block of Washington Blvd., said Sgt. Robert Wiseman, a spokesman for the county's fire and rescue services.

The Fire Department was called shortly before 10 p.m. and firefighters arrived to find a burning mattress outside and extinguished it, Sergeant Wiseman said.

Three motel guests who had heard a smoke alarm in the motel's Room 101 had forced open the door and found the burning mattress in the unoccupied room, Sergeant Wiseman said. They pulled the mattress from the room, which helped limit the fire, he said.

There were no serious injuries reported, but Douglas Smith, 34, of Ellicott City was cut on a finger while helping to remove the burning mattress, the spokesman said. He was treated at the scene.

POLICE LOG

Ellicott City: 8500 block of Baltimore National Pike: A white 1991 Acura Legend was stolen between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. Wednesday. The car did not have tags.
