Crofton teens, police plan block party

The Crofton Teen Club and the Crofton Police Department are sponsoring a block party on Aug. 2 as part of National Night Out Against Crime observances.

This "going-away party" for crime will begin at 7 p.m. on the baseball fields at Crofton Elementary School. There will be games, snacks, a disk jockey, a puppet show for younger kids, give aways and much more. The party will conclude at 10 p.m. with a flashlight walk around Crofton Parkway.

Believe it or not, it's time to start thinking about fall sports.

Six Arundel High School teams will start practice on Aug. 15 on Arundel High fields: boys soccer at 9 a.m.; coed cross-country at 7 p.m.; field hockey at 8 a.m.; football at 9 a.m.; girls soccer at 9 a.m.; and girls volleyball at 9 a.m. Golf practice will begin at 2:25 p.m. on Aug. 29.

Professional magician Michael Chamberlin is returning with his bagful of comedy magic to the Crofton Library at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 11.

His free magic show is part of the library's Summer Reading Program, which is geared toward youngsters entering grades 1-6 1 to 6th graders.

Registration is not required for the show; but seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Crofton Association of Retired Persons is planning a trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., in October.

The bus will leave from Prince of Peace Church on Crofton Parkway at 7 a.m. Oct 17 and return on Oct. 21.

The five-day, four-night trip includes four breakfasts, four dinners, a guided tour of historic Charleston and evening entertainment.

Reservations are due by Aug. 1. For more information, call Ed or Miriam Laird, 721-5251.

As a former resident, I can say that Charleston is a charming city and this should be a trip to be remembered.

The Crofton Fall Soccer Shoot Out Tournament will be held Aug. 27 and 28 for boys and girls soccer teams in age categories ranging from under 11 to under 15.

Volunteers are urgently needed in all areas of the operation to make the tournament a success.
