Business as usual can mean success

Summer may mean vacations for many but for the business world, it is business as usual. It is always a pleasure to report that East Columbia businesses in particular are writing their very own success story.

East Columbia welcomes Dan Spalding, new resident and new owner of Chaselle's Learning Depot, Gerwig Lane, Owen Brown Village. Mr. Spalding is CEO of another school and art supply firm, Valley School Supply of Wisconsin.

National Business Products, Inc. has expanded after only five years. The company's president, Gary Porter, selected Stonewood Business Center, Oakland Mills Road, to accommodate clientele, as well as to expand office and storage space for processing and packaging of commercial orders.

Straight Shots Product Photography, 9017 Mendenhall Court, is another success story. They have expanded their clientele by 80 percent since last year! They have photographed catalogs, brochures, reports and fliers for companies along the East Coast as well as local advertising and design firms.

Arrow Data Systems is offering a free seminar on "Computer Integrated Construction" at the Columbia Hilton, Oakland Mills Village, on July 27. Call 730-2000 for details.

The Business Women's Network of Howard County invites members and friends to an informal luncheon at Piccolo's Restaurant, 7090 Deepage Drive and Snowden River Parkway, at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow. The network has been very successful and the luncheon is a great way to discover how companies and businesses have benefited from membership. Information: 740-0126.

Planning a summer birthday party? The Dasher Green Room at Owen Brown Community Center can be rented during July and August at a $25 rate, Monday

All middle school students are invited to a pool party at 7 p.m. tomorrow evening at Faulkner Ridge Neighborhood Pool, Wilde Lake Village. Pool membership is not required, but registration, 730-3987, is required.

Middle School pool parties sponsored by the Teen Center, Oakland Mills Village will be held July 28, Jeffers Hill pool; Aug. 1, Longfellow pool; Aug. 11, Running Brook pool. Pool membership is not required. Information: 992-3726.

Missed the first three summer concerts in Oakland Mills Village's Summer Courtyard Concerts? Then mark your calendar for the Oakland Mills Community Association's Friday rock 'n' roll blast by the Amaretto Variety Band, featuring two vocalists and a complete horn section.

The season's jazz finale July 29 by D.C. Express brings contemporary vocal harmony and jazz standards from the 1930s to the 1950s. The free concerts begin at 8 p.m. in the Courtyard.
