Deer season begins with hunting show

Deer season starts long before opening day, because hunters realize that preseason preparation goes a long way toward making a successful hunt, whether the weapon of choice is bow, muzzleloader or modern firearm.

Hoiles will be at the show from noon to 2 p.m. on July 30.

Boating danger

What's the most dangerous time of day to be boating? BOAT/U.S., a national association of boat owners, says that more persons are killed in boating accidents between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. than at any other time.

Venue change for tournament

Ocean City's Small Boat Tournament will be run out of the Ocean City Fishing Center this year because the Marlin Club has dropped its affiliation with the competition.

The tournament, which runs July 29, 30, 31, has separate divisions for men, women, children and commercial. Awards are given for flounder, sea bass, sea trout, bluefish and sharks. For more information, call (800) 286-6499.

New sponsor for marlin event

The White Marlin Open, which runs in Ocean City Aug. 1-5, has a new sponsor this year, Volvo, which plans to give away an 850 Turbo Sedan as a grand prize.

Tournament organizers say that entries are up this year and prize money could exceed the $255,700 paid last year to David Taylor of Owings, Md., for a 413-pound blue marlin. The payoff to Taylor was the largest in the 20-year history of the event.

Entries close at 5 p.m. July 31. For more information, call (410) 289-9229.
