CYNTHIA KOPKOWSKI OF SEVERN

Volunteer work: Cynthia volunteers at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Save the Bay Shop in Annapolis, assisting customers with purchases, working the cash register, typing correspondence and helping with inventory.

She recently began working for HAVEN (HIV/AIDS Volunteer Enrichment Network), a nonprofit organization that assists AIDS patients. She has been named executive board secretary.

About the volunteer: Cynthia will enter her senior year at Archbishop Spalding High School in the fall and plans to attend college and major in journalism.

At Archbishop Spalding, she is a member of the varsity volleyball team, plays the saxophone in the concert band and belongs to the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

She is secretary of the National Honor Society and a member of the class council and the student government association.

Volunteer's comment: "There's lots of different ways to volunteer. I decided that that Save the Bay would be a good cause."

Organization's comments: Julia Williams, marketing and merchandising assistant for the Save the Bay Shop, who schedules and trains volunteers, says she was most struck by Cynthia's age and "how involved she is in so many different things." She also marveled at Cynthia's "initiative."

"She called and wanted to volunteer. When she started . . . she was fairly young and really very interested and very eager to volunteer and give her time. She's really a great worker, very congenial and willing to do anything that needs to be done. Just a terrific kid."

About the shop: The Save the Bay Shop, at 188 Main St., sells T-shirts, books, posters, videos and other bay-related merchandise Profits help the foundation maintain the bay's health and beauty.

The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Catalogs are available for mail orders.

Ms. Williams says there are many volunteer opportunities at the shop and that help is always needed. "We're such a small shop, we have the volunteers do a lot of different things."
