Pitching isn't Smith's biggest worry

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Until last week, Orioles closer Lee Smith had not allowed runs in back-to-back appearances.

Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson and Nolan Ryan also attended.

Palmeiro likes Orioles' chances

The Orioles would have moved into first place in the American League East with Thursday's victory if the New York Yankees had not rallied from a 7-1 deficit to defeat the Seattle Mariners, 13-8, with seven runs in the ninth inning.

"I thought for a second we were going to be in first," Rafael Palmeiro said. "But that's OK. If we keep playing the way we're playing, we're going to run away from the pack."
