July 06, 1994|By From Staff Reports

Bob Valvano announced yesterday that he is stepping down as St. Mary's men's basketball coach and assistant athletic director to become the men's coach at Bellarmine College in Louisville, Ky.

Valvano, who coached for two years at Division III St. Mary's, led the Seahawks to a school-record 14 victories last season.

"Bellarmine is in the best Division II conference in the nation, is an outstanding school in a fine city and enables me to continue my working relationship with [former St. Mary's athletic director] Jay Gardiner," Valvano said.

He agreed to a four-year contract with Bellarmine, but will stay at St. Mary's through the end of the month.
