BMA closes on Tuesdays

July 05, 1994|By John Dorsey

After being open on Tuesdays for a little more than three months, the Baltimore Museum of Art is again closed on Tuesdays. From now on, the museum will be open Wednesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The BMA, traditionally open every day but Mondays, began closing on Tuesdays in January 1992, in response to a cutback in city funds.

On March 22 of this year, the museum announced that it would be open on Tuesdays through the end of the fiscal year. BMA director Arnold Lehman said that the main reason was a "backlog in city schools requesting museum visits and docent-led tours" and that the city would pay the costs of opening Tuesdays.

At the time, Mr. Lehman said the museum would close again on Tuesdays beginning in July unless the city provided funding for it to stay open.

BMA deputy director Brenda Richardson said yesterday the museum had requested $100,000 from the city specifically for Tuesday openings but didn't get it.
