American League -- Suspended Butch Hobson, Boston Red Sox manager, for five games for shoving an umpire in a game Tuesday. Hobson has appealed and will continue to manage until a hearing is held.

Orioles -- Activated OF Mike Devereaux. Placed OF Lonnie Smith on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday.

Boston Red Sox -- Traded P Jeff Russell to the Cleveland Indians for P Steve Farr and P Chris Nabholz.

New York Mets -- Signed P Ethan Burke and P Kenny Pumphrey and assigned them to the Gulf Coast (Rookie) League.

San Diego Padres -- Purchased the contract of P Bill Krueger from Triple-A Las Vegas. Outrighted P Mike Campbell to Las Vegas.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Named Brian Bartow director of public relations.

Texas Rangers -- Placed P Rick Honeycutt on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Wednesday.

Basketball

Golden State Warriors -- Traded the rights to F Anthony Miller to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a second-round pick in the 1995 draft.

Los Angeles Clippers -- Tendered qualifying offers to G Harold Ellis, F Charles Outlaw and C Bob Martin, making them restricted free agents.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Renounced the rights to C Danny Schayes.

Minnesota Timberwolves -- Bought out the final four years of the contract of F Chuck Person, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Orlando Magic -- Announced that G Anfernee Hardaway has exercised his contract option to become a restricted free agent.

Portland Trail Blazers -- Tendered qualifying offers to G Jaren Jackson and C Kevin Thompson. Declined to pick up the option year on the contract of F-C Reggie Smith.

Utah Jazz -- Released F Tom Chambers and C Mark Eaton. Extended a qualifying offer to F Bryon Russell. Picked up the option year on the contract of G John Crotty.

Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association -- Named Matt Newberry interim director of sports information.

Louisiana State -- Announced Craig Carse, assistant basketball coach, is leaving to become the senior executive vice president of the United States Basketball Academy in Springfield, Ore.

Louisiana Tech -- Announced the resignation of Jerry Stovall, athletic director, to become president and chief executive officer of the Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation.

Nicholls State -- Named Jeff Norwood men's assistant basketball coach.

Northern Illinois -- Named Liz Galloway-McQuitter women's basketball coach.

Tennessee Tech -- Named Harold Smith women's assistant basketball coach.

West Florida -- Named Megan E. Henry women's basketball coach.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Re-signed LB Eric Shaw.
