Angels update

California (33-46) remains 3 1/2 games back in the American League West even after being swept three games by the Oakland Athletics. The Angels, whose offense rests on Tim Salmon (16 home runs, 55 RBIs) and Chili Davis (13, 54), are in a major run-scoring drought. They have gone 22 innings without scoring a run. They were shut out in the final two games by Oakland, managing just four hits. Davis, a switch-hitting designated hitter who is batting .332, missed his third straight game on Wednesday with a tender right groin. The Angels have lost five of the six games with Davis out of the lineup. California's pitching staff has not fared well, either. The Angels have a staff ERA of 5.23. Their starters have allowed 47 homers in 324 innings, which is an average of one home run every seven innings. California starters also are winless since June 21. The Angels are 10-19 against the AL East.
