A New York man staying at a Jessup motel was assaulted and robbed by an unknown assailant early yesterday after he answered a knock on his room door, county police said.

The attack occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. when Harry Uhl answered his door at the Red Roof Inn in the 8000 block of Washington Blvd. Police said Mr. Uhl was struck in the head with an unidentified weapon, beaten and robbed of an undisclosed amount of personal property.

Mr. Uhl, of Lansing, N.Y., received scalp lacerations and bruises to his chest, side and back, police said. He was treated and released at Howard General Hospital.

The suspect was described as a black male between 25 and 30 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing approximately 150 pounds. He had short-cropped hair and a dark complexion and wore a dark-colored sweat shirt and red sweat pants.
