July 01, 1994

Police were searching last night for a 32-year-old man charged in the shooting Monday night of a Northwestern District police officer who was wounded in both hands during a traffic stop on Park Heights Avenue, authorities said.

Stephen Mercer, of the 4100 block of Park Heights Ave., was charged yesterday in a warrant with attempted murder, assault with intent to murder and two handgun violations.

Officer Kevin Baskette, 31, was shot about 7 p.m. when he stopped an unlicensed cab with an expired registration in the 4300 block of Park Heights Ave.

Police said a male passenger ran from the car and Officer Baskette chased him. During the chase, the man turned and shot at the officer.

One bullet lodged in the officer's right hand; the second grazed his left hand. He was treated at the Union Memorial Hand Clinic and was sent home Wednesday.

A police spokeswoman said Officer Baskette had identified the suspect through a photograph.
