McCormick & Co. Inc., the Sparks-based spice and flavorings company, yesterday announced it has bought a Swiss herb and spice operation, called Butty, and the British packaging firm, Minipack Systems Ltd.

The company would not disclose the exact costs of the two companies, but they were both under $10 million each, according to Donald A. Palumbo, vice president and treasurer of McCormick.

McCormick, which is already the largest spice company in Switzerland, will boost its market share to 40 percent with the purchase of the Butty herb and spice division based in Switzerland, Mr. Palumbo said. Butty was part of Lipton-Sais A. G., a Swiss subsidiary of the giant Dutch-British Unilever N. V.

The purchase also provides McCormick an entry into the Swiss institution food market, Mr. Palumbo said.

The acquisition of Minipack Systems Ltd. of Southampton, Hampshire, England, will broaden McCormick's packaging division into the area of making small plastic containers used for product samples, Mr. Palumbo said.
