Hospital arranges for employee parking at college

To provide patients and visitors with more parking, Carroll County General Hospital has worked out a plan to allow employees to park at Carroll Community College and take a shuttle van to the hospital.

The service starts tomorrow, and its use is voluntary.

Construction of the hospital's emergency room removed some spaces, and patients and visitors were having trouble finding parking, said Gill Chamblin, a hospital spokeswoman.

Carroll Community College has agreed to let the hospital use its 300-space lot on Washington Road for the next two or three months, until the hospital's new parking lot on Center Street is completed, Ms. Chamblin said.

Carroll County General has leased a 20-seat van to bring employees to the hospital from the CCC lot in the morning and return them in the evening. The van will run every 20 minutes from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 6:20 p.m.

The van will also be available between those hours to take employees to the college parking lot, the hospital spokeswoman said.

"It's a little more effort for employees, but it will make things easier for the patients," Ms. Chamblin said. "It may not cure all the parking problems, but it could go a long way to help."

She said hospital supervisors will be flexible if employees are late to work because of the van schedule.

During the van's first week, the hospital will serve coffee and pastries in the mornings at the college parking lot.

The hospital is also encouraging employees to car pool to help alleviate the parking problem.

Employees who form car pools with at least three riders will receive prime parking spaces in the employee parking lot. In addition, Ms. Chamblin said, all those who car pool will receive a free lunch in the cafeteria.
