Van rams cruiser in 100-mph chase

June 25, 1994

A minivan taken in a Pennsylvania carjacking led police on a six-mile, 100-mph westbound chase on the Baltimore Beltway last night before the van rammed a state trooper's cruiser and crashed into a concrete median near Falls Road, authorities said.

The van's driver and a state trooper were flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where reports on their condition were unavailable early today.

Investigators were at the scene of the wreckage, which still snarled westbound Beltway traffic after midnight.

State police said the chase began about 10:50 p.m. near Loch Raven Boulevard. The minivan's driver refused to pull over, police said, and the officer called for backup. As many as eight state and Baltimore County cruisers joined the chase.

At times the driver seemed to turn his vehicle intentionally toward the police cars, they said.

Officers eventually surrounded the van, and it crashed into the barrier.
