Market House occupants can negotiate new leases

The Annapolis City Council's Economic Matters Committee has decided to negotiate leases with the existing tenants of the beloved Market House.

The decision is in keeping with the requests of dozens of residents and the Market House merchants who pleaded with the committee to keep the historic market the way it is.

Committee members had asked for suggestions on how to improve the 126-year-old Market House, and the residents and merchants showed up at a hearing earlier this month.

Although there were a few suggestions about ways to make the building look more attractive, most of those who testified adamantly supported the market as it is.

A separate committee is considering whether there should be changes in the products sold at the Market House.

The leases of the nine merchants in the city-owned building expire at the end of the year. The tenants currently pay the city about $110,000 a year.

Alderman Carl O. Snowden, a Ward 5 Democrat and head of the Economic Matters Committee, said the city may ask for changes in the leases, but will not seek proposals from other business owners.

Crack cocaine seized; man, woman charged

Annapolis police reported confiscating 11 grams of crack cocaine worth $1,100 from a man and a woman who were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

Reichel Leo Hastey, 36, of the 1100 block of Eastport Terrace and Shawnte R. Brown, 20, of the 100 block of Obery Court were arrested on Clay Street near Glenwood Street about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Hastey was held on $55,000 bail in the county jail. Ms. Brown was released on her own recognizance.
