Deitrich Arlan Smith of the 7800 block of Tall Pines Court was arrested shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday at Fort Meade, said Officer Randy Bell, a spokesman for the county Police Department.

Mr. Sturdivant, his girlfriend and her father met a man they identified as Mr. Smith, who is the ex-boyfriend of Mr. Sturdivant's girlfriend, homicide detectives said.

Police said Mr. Sturdivant and his two companions decided to go Mr. Smith's apartment, where an argument began. Mr. Sturdivant and Mr. Smith struggled briefly before Mr. Sturdivant was shot, police said.

RF Police would not release the name of the girlfriend or her father.
