Early birdies help Bilbo win

June 18, 1994|By John W. Stewart

Bob Bilbo birdied four of his first six holes and went on to a 35-3166 to win the pro sweeps phase of a Middle Atlantic PGA pro-am at Piney Branch Golf Club yesterday. Bilbo, head pro at Argyle Country Club, finished with six birdies and a bogey for his tour of the 6,500-yard par 36-3571 Carroll County course.

Brian Lehnhard of Glenn Dale GC also started at No. 10 and went to the turn in 31, also with four birdies. He offset his only bogey with a birdie for a par-matching nine.

Charlie Palmer of Piney Branch, a one-time professional who regained amateur status several years ago, nearly surpassed Bilbo down the back nine, but a series of lipped-out putts left him at 33-3467.
