Carew Raps Sandberg American League

June 18, 1994|By Los Angeles Times

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg is being admired for retiring this week and forfeiting a potential $16 million, but California Angels batting coach Rod Carew has difficulty respecting him.

"He's a guy who had eight good years in the big leagues, he has one bad year, and he walks out on his teammates," Carew said. "If I was on the team, I would have felt like he let me down as one of his teammates.

"People say he doesn't care about money. How about the guys around him? What about them?

"How many people has he seen struggling? They battled through it. Why couldn't he?"
