The success of the national Hoop It Up tournament has spawned a similar tournament that will be played here this weekend. Instead of layups, slams and three-pointers, however, players on more than 100 teams will be making aces, spikes and blocks.

The Spike It Up tournament will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday at Goucher College. The amateur volleyball tournament is open to players 11 and older. All winners receive a Spike It Up T-shirt.

Players can enter the tournament either as a two-person or four-person team for $50 and $100, respectively.

Competition consists of five skill levels: Top Gun, Competitive, Recreational, Just for Fun and the qualifying rounds for the Association of Volleyball Professionals Tournament, which will be played next weekend.

Teams will compete in a double-elimination tournament in all five divisions.

Spike It Up registration information may be picked up from Bally's Holiday Fitness Centers, local volleyball leagues and Baltimore area Isuzu dealers.

For more information on Spike It Up, call the Maryland Sports Corporation at (410)-539-6402.

The AVP Tournament, to be played June 24-26 at the HarborView Marina and Yacht Club, is scheduled to include Karch Kiraly, Randy Stoklos, Kent Steffes, Adam Johnson, Holly McPeak, Cammy Ciarelli and Nancy Reno.

Reserved-seating tickets for the AVP Tournament are available at all TicketMaster locations. Reserved seats are $10-$20 for Saturday and $15-$45 for Sunday. Admission on Friday is free. General admission tickets are $5 at the gate on Saturday and Sunday. For reserved tickets call 1-800-793-TOUR.
