Channel 13 not televising U.S. opener

June 15, 1994|By Mike Preston

Channel 13, the local ABC-TV affiliate, will not carry some of the nine World Cup games the network has scheduled, and it will not televise the United States' opener against Switzerland on Saturday in Pontiac, Mich.

The station's vice president and general manager, Marcellus Alexander, said the U.S. opener, at 11:30 a.m., will not be shown because the station had a commitment to the high school quiz show "It's Academic."

Alexander said the station will show one of three scheduled games on June 25 and one of three on June 26.

If the viewing audience is high, Alexander said the station probably would show other ABC games later in the tournament.

"Sellout crowds are expected at these games, but it is yet to be seen how the television audience will respond," said Alexander.

"We now have these overnight report cards, so we'll be able to get the numbers. If the viewing audience is high, we would probably go with more games."
