Bates principal sued by mother alleging slap

June 15, 1994

An Annapolis woman sued the principal of Bates Middle School yesterday for $150,000, alleging that she slapped the woman's 12-year-old daughter after the girl refused to pick up a dirty spoon in the school cafeteria Nov. 30, 1992.

Debbie Brown of the 1300 block of Harbor Road claims in the suit that her daughter, who was placed on home teaching, then transferred to another school, has suffered severe abdominal cramps, headaches and other health problems as a result of the incident.

Ms. Brown is accusing the principal, Sarah A. McGowan, of negligence, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress on her daughter, Cynthia.

The suit alleges that after slapping the child, Mrs. McGowan "physically restrained and escorted" Cynthia to the principal's office, where she suspended the child.

Ms. McGowan also called police and charged the seventh-grader with criminal assault, according to the suit.
