Residents are needed on historic panel

June 08, 1994|By From Staff Reports

Although several people have volunteered to serve on the Sykesville Historic District Commission, their residency makes them ineligible to vote on the board.

All the volunteers live outside the town limits and may serve only as associates on the five-member board.

"They can be associate members, but only town residents can vote on the commission," said Rebecca Herman, commission chair.

Ms. Herman said she accepts all offers of assistance and has assured the recent volunteers, many of whom own businesses in Sykesville, that they will have opportunities to help. The commission will need many helpers as it begins renovating the Gatehouse into a museum and meeting area.

The commission reviews building plans for the historic district and helps preserve local artifacts. Two recent resignations have left the three remaining members with a large work load.

"We still have a quorum," said Chairwoman Rebecca Herman. "But I get nervous when our membership is down this low."

The commission meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Town House, 7547 Main St.
