Columbia Darby repeats in Md. Cup

Mike Bagrosky wasn't sure why he was so wide open. But he did make certain not to squander the opportunities.

Twice in the first half, Bagrosky found himself standing unattended on the 6-yard line. Both times he deposited teammates' crosses into the net, sparking the Columbia Darby to a 3-0 triumph over the Olney Internationals for the boys under-16 crown of the 19th Maryland Cup Championships yesterday at Glenwood Park.

"Either you contribute to it by beating your man or they're not marking me," said Bagrosky. "I just don't give much thought to it. All I see is the goal, the ball and not much else around me."

In its second year, the Darby will travel to the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I Championships July 1-4 in Mercer County, N.J., hoping to repeat 1993's regional championship just as it had its Maryland Cup.

Should the Darby again capture Region I, the players are now old enough to earn a ticket to Blaine, Minn., July 28-31 for the national championships, which are for the U-16 through U-19 age groups.

All boys and girls winners from the U-12 age group and older will play in the regionals.

In girls play, Baltimore's Chesapeake Bay Thunder registered a 2-1 decision over the Bethesda Shakers for the U-17 crown.
