EDMONSTON — House fire kills woman, 2 children

EDMONSTON -- Two young children and a pregnant woman died in a fire yesterday at a small house shared by two families, county fire officials said.

The children were found in a back bedroom of the house, where they apparently had attempted to escape from the fire. The woman was found in another room toward the front of the house.

The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly after 9 a.m., said Capt. Victor Stagnaro, county Fire Department spokesman. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Killed in the fire were Ashley McClanahan, 4, Andre Eccleston, 2, and Andre's mother, 19-year-old Shelly Maupin, fire officials said. Another child, Amanda Eccleston, 4, was in the home at the time of the fire but escaped unharmed, Captain Stagnaro said. Ashley McClanahan was the goddaughter of Ms. Maupin.

"The little girl [Amanda] came running out of the house," said Wendy Glascock, a neighbor who saw the fire. "The house was on fire. We turned around and saw the little girl. We came over and comforted her."

Two families, totaling eight people, shared the small two-story home, Captain Stagnaro said. Other members of the McClanahan family were away at the time of the fire, he said.
