Free food from USDA to be distributed on June 9 at National Guard Armory

Members of the Community Action Council of Howard County will distribute free food to eligible county residents at the National Guard Armory in Ellicott City on June 9.

The Columbia-based Community Action Council, a nonprofit agency that helps low-income people, expects 1,200 families and individuals at the food giveaway, which is held each year in March, June, September and December.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture supplies the food to the county. More than 15 years ago, the county designated the Community Action Council the distributor.

The June menu includes apple juice, cornmeal, butter, peanut butter, apple sauce, dry split peas and rice.

"When the program first started, they only give away one commodity; that was cheese," said Dorothy Moore, executive director of the Community Action Council.

The food will be distributed from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and volunteers at Community Action urge participants to bring bags for the food. Any food that volunteers don't give away that day will be placed in Community Action's Ellicott City pantry.

But giving away the food isn't much of a problem, said Ms. Moore.

"We generally get rid of all the food," she said. "It's very well received in this county."

In order to receive free food, recipients must present an Independence Card, Medical Assistance (Medicaid) Card, Maryland Access to Care Card or a Maryland Energy Assistance Program Benefit Notice.

Those without such identifications must show proof that their income does not exceed these income guidelines:

-- One-person household: $10,455 a year or $872 a month.

-- Two-person household: $14,145 a year or $1,179 a month.

-- Three-person household: $17,835 a year or $1,487 a month.

-- Four-person household:

$21,525 a year or $1,794 a month.

-- Five-person household: $25,215 a year or $2,102 a month.

-- Six-person household: $28,905 a year or $2,409 a month.

-- Seven-person household: $32,595 a year or $2,717 a month.

-- Eight-person household: $36,285 a year or $3,024 a month.

For each additional family member beyond that, add $3,690 a year or $308 a month.
