Generations in the Swim

May 31, 1994|By Joyce S. Brown

Great Gran in her flowered bathing cap

moves crabwise: a stroke that has

no name like breast or side.

Grandma in a skirted suit is fiftyish

Mom swims in the shallow end

with sun-tanned child who is

maybe three. "Reach," she counsels.

"Kick your feet. Keep reaching. Reach."
