A national search will be conducted to find a new president for Harford Community College, a college spokeswoman said Friday.

Richard J. Pappas, who has been president of the college for the past five years, officially submitted his letter of resignation to the college's board of trustees Thursday.

He will leave the college Aug. 15 to become president of Lake Michigan College, a community college in Benton Harbor, Mich.

An interim president will be chosen by the board in July, said Frances M. Turcott, director of marketing and community relations at the college.

Meanwhile, a search for the college's eighth president will be held. The college's board of trustees is considering the use of consultants in its search and will soon begin interviewing consulting firms.

A college search committee will also be set up.

The college hopes to fill the position within six months, Ms. Turcott said.
