A 40-year-old Finksburg man was held in lieu of $50,000 bond on assault and related charges Friday after state police said he bit and cut a woman, resulting in her hospitalization Thursday night.

The woman, Patricia Mehaffie of Westminster, had been bitten on the face, neck and lips, and cut on the neck with a knife, police said.

Jerry Wayne Massey of 2100 block of Bollinger Mill Road was arrested at his home after a trooper saw the injured woman at Carroll County General Hospital, where she sought medical treatment.

Ms. Mehaffie told police that she and a man were sitting in a car in the 300 block of Manchester Road about 9:15 p.m. Thursday when he leaned toward her as though he was about to kiss her and began biting her face.

She told police he also placed a knife against her neck and said, "I'm going to kill you."

Ms. Mehaffie told police that the man had demanded sex with her before he bit her.

Police did not say in the charging documents how the woman managed to get away from the man or how she got to the hospital.

Mr. Massey was charged with one count each of assault with intent to murder, intent to rape, intent to commit first-degree sex offense and maiming. He also was charged with assault, battery, carrying a concealed deadly weapon and having a knife with the intent to injure the victim.

Police said the woman has been released from the hospital.
