National League -- Suspended John Smoltz, Atlanta Braves pitcher, for eight games and fined him an undisclosed amount for throwing at John Cangelosi of the New York Mets during a game played May 14, and suspended Cangelosi for four games and fined him an undisclosed amount for charging the mound.

Boston Red Sox -- Called up IF Greg Litton from Triple-A Pawtucket. Sent 3B Luis Ortiz to Pawtucket. Designated P Jose Melendez for assignment.

Colorado Rockies -- Placed P Armando Reynoso on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 21.

Detroit Tigers -- Placed OF Eric Davis on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 23. Activated OF Junior Felix from the DL.

Kansas City Royals -- Promoted IF Jeff Garber from Double-A Memphis. Assigned IF Domingo Mota to Memphis.

San Diego Padres -- Purchased the contract of P Joey Hamilton from Triple-A Las Vegas. Asked waivers on P Mark Davis for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release.

Basketball

Toronto Raptors -- Named Isiah Thomas vice president.

Long Island Surf (USBL) -- Signed and activated F Michael Reese (Loyola) from the taxi squad.

College

Ball State -- Named Tim Buckley men's assistant basketball coach.

Centenary -- Announced resignation of assistant basketball coach Steve Roccaforte, who will take a similar position at Tulane University.

Loyola -- Named Katha Scheeler head women's volleyball coach.

UC Santa Barbara -- Named Virgil Watson men's assistant basketball coach.

Green Bay Packers -- Re-signed LB Mike Merriweather.

Jacksonville Jaguars -- Named Joe Baker manager of football operations.

Minnesota Vikings -- Agreed to terms with RB Amp Lee on a one-year contract.

New England Patriots -- Re-signed WR Michael Timpson.

Washington Redskins -- Agreed to terms with RB Brian Mitchell.

CFL Colts -- Signed S Alvin Walton.

Las Vegas Posse (CFL) -- Waived LB Pete Gosar, OL Brett Lorius and DB Jeff Reynolds.

Sacramento Gold Miners (CFL) -- Traded DE Emanuel King to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in exchange for DE George Bethune.

Toronto Argonauts (CFL) -- Signed WR Paul Cranmer, WR Eric Drage, WR Reginald Gillard and WR J. R. Reed.

Los Angeles Kings -- Named Sam McMaster general manager. Announced Bruce McNall, who sold majority interest in the Kings to Jeffrey Sudikoff and Joseph Cohen, will retain his role as governor while taking on the title of team president. Named Cohen chairman of the board; named Rogie Vachon assistant to the president. Named Michael Handelman vice president of finance.

Quebec Nordiques -- Fired Pierre Page, coach and general manager. Named Pierre Lacroix general manager.
