Who are these guys on mound tonight?

Orioles and Milwaukee Brewers batters will be hard-pressed to remember tonight's left-handed starters, Milwaukee's Ted Higuera and the Orioles' Sid Fernandez, when they resume their three-game series at County Stadium at 8:05.

The Orioles, who could win their first road series since May 4 in Oakland with a victory, haven't seen Higuera for two years, while only two active Brewers have an at-bat against Fernandez, who had spent his first 10 major-league seasons in the National League.

The Brewers' Tom Brunansky and Brian Harper only have a total of 17 at-bats against Fernandez. Milwaukee, which is 2-5 vs. left-handed starters this year, could break its club record with a 13th consecutive loss tonight.

Higuera is 6-7 with a 3.39 ERA in 116 2/3 career innings against the Orioles. The 10 Orioles that have hit against Higuera have a combined .226 average.

Fernandez has lost his past two starts after winning his first two decisions, but only has had one bad performance this season. After allowing seven runs in a 4 2/3 -inning stint against Minnesota May 14, Fernandez went eight strong innings, giving up three runs on seven hits to Boston on Thursday.

Fernandez has pitched into the eighth in two of his past three starts. The Orioles will need another strong effort tonight as they have used five relievers each of the past two games.

The only reliever not to appear in those two games, Mike Oquist, pitched seven innings three days ago.

The Orioles have won five of eight games started by left-handers this year, including a 2-1 record in May. However, in those three games against left-handed starters this month, the Orioles have scored just six runs on 23 hits.

Orioles left-handed starters had a 4.31 ERA against the Brewers last year, walking 21 with 20 strikeouts.
