Sprinkler system malfunctions, damaging home

May 23, 1994

A new townhouse in Hampstead was severely damaged Thursday when a sprinkler system malfunctioned in the attic and sent water cascading down the walls, fire officials said.

Firefighters from Hampstead, Manchester and Arcadia of Baltimore County were dispatched to the house in the 4800 block of Hillock Lane after the owner arrived home about 6:30 p.m. and found water running out from under the front door and covering the floors.

Hampstead Fire Chief Herb Raver said the firefighters turned off the water to the sprinkler system and then assisted in getting the standing water out of the townhouse. Units were out for more than 90 minutes.

The resident, who has lived at the house for two months, discovered the flooding after taking her daughter to a dance class, officials said.
