* The Turpis Companies, of Crofton, received a contract to supervise the upgrading of electrical systems at Federal National Mortgage Association headquarters in Washington.

* Vertical Software Inc., of Columbia, was awarded contracts to implement various electronic document management, document imaging and workstation systems by the U.S. Senate Federal Credit Union, the Mount Vernon Ladies Association and Capital Gazette Communications of Annapolis.

* Chesapeake Telephone System was given an award by Bell Atlantic Corp. for outstanding achievement.

* Crosby Communications, of Annapolis, has won a National Academy award in health care marketing for its promotional campaign on cancer prevention in behalf of the Anne Arundel County Heath Department.

* Commerce Electric Supply Co., based in Linthicum Heights, was named by Juno Lighting as its Distributor of the Year for 1993.

* David Wiesand was named to receive the Distinguished Alumnus award from the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Towson State University.

* Jeanette Hamilton of the W. R. Grace & Co. corporate research division, based in Columbia, was awarded the Chairman's Exceptional Achievement Award.

* Preston Productions, of Abington, was awarded a Telly Award, given for outstanding commercials on cable and non-network TV.

* Adrian G. Teel, a public finance manager for Ferris, Baker Watts, has received the William Fell Award from the Johns Hopkins University Committee on the Port of Baltimore.

* H. Thomas Lewis has been chosen president of the Mason-Dixon District Exchange Clubs.
