Police seeking man suspected in attempted rape

May 22, 1994

Howard County police are looking for a man they suspect of attempting to rape a 35-year-old Columbia woman as she walked along a footbridge in Town Center on Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives interviewed several witnesses who helped provide a description of the man, who police think is a Columbia resident. The man is described as black, in his 20s, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a thin to medium build.

The victim told police that the man approached her from behind about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday as she walked on a bridge that crosses U.S. 29 near Lake Kittamaqundi. She said he pushed her off the path and into the woods, where he punched her face and tore her clothing.

The attacker ran when two children on bicycles passed nearby.

The woman was treated for a fractured nose, police said.

Anyone with information can qualify for a Metro Crime Stoppers' reward of up to $1,000 by calling 276-8888.
