Friends gains MIAA 'B' title series

Freshman John Yeager gave up two hits in 6 2/3 innings, leading visiting Friends past St. Paul's, 5-2, in the third and deciding game of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference Tournament semifinal series yesterday.

Friends will visit Lutheran Monday at 3:45 p.m. in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series.

David Schummers broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth with a two-run single. Yeager, who won both games for Friends in the series, left with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Carter Adkinson got Jason Horich to ground out to end the game.

* Randallstown 3, Lansdowne 1: Brian Ward struck out six and allowed one run, leading third-seeded and visiting Randallstown past defending state champion and No. 7 Lansdowne, in a state 3A North regional semifinal game.

Todd Pinson went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Randallstown. He doubled in the fourth for the game's first run. The Rams meet Dundalk at Dundalk Community College at 3 p.m. in today's regional final.

* City 5, Poly 3: Pat Mowray went 3-for-3 with an RBI and John Hamilton pitched a two-hitter, leading host and top-seeded City past fourth-seeded Poly in a state 3A East regional semifinal game.

Mowray and Hamilton hit back-to-back home runs in the third, giving the Knights a 3-1 lead. Hamilton struck out seven and walked one, helping City to its third victory of the season over the Engineers.

* Dundalk 3, Franklin 0: E'mar Fleming pitched a complete-game four-hitter, leading top-seeded and No. 6 Dundalk past visiting Franklin in a state 3A North region semifinal. Travis Thornton went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and John Blalock went 1-for-2 with two RBIs for the Owls.

* Atholton 6, Surrattsville 3: Jason Sandner and Brandon Eyerman each drove in two runs, helping fourth-seeded and No. 13 Atholton past host and top-seeded Surrattsville in a state 2A South region semifinal game.

Atholton will meet third-seeded Lackey at White Plains Regional Park today at 1 p.m. for the regional championship.

Eyerman broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with a two-run double. Sandner and Derek Schnieder each had two hits for Atholton.

* Perry Hall 12, Mervo 2: Jason Essel, Ryan Burks and Kevin Znamirowski each drove in three runs, leading top-seeded and No. 5 Perry Hall over No. 4 seed Mervo in a state 4A North regional semifinal game. Manuel Marsh went 3-for-3 and scored four runs for the Gators, who will play host to third-seeded and No. 19 Southern-Baltimore today at Dundalk CC at 5:30 p.m.

* Overlea 8, Towson 4: Frank Eufemia had a two-run double and Craig Schoepflin hit a grand slam, highlighting a six-run fifth, leading top seed Overlea over Towson in a Class 2A North regional semifinal game.

John Kopajtic pitched a complete game, striking out 14, for Overlea, which will play host to Elkton today at noon for the regional championship.

* Elkton 6, Edgewood 1: Rick Brockwell went 3-for-4, as $l third-seeded Elkton took advantage of seven errors by host and second-seeded Edgewood, in a state 2A North regional semifinal game.

Mark Sutton pitched a complete-game three-hitter, striking out eight, for Elkton.

* Rising Sun 9, Joppatowne 6: Jamie McCardell and Brian Wilson each drove in two runs, leading top-seeded Rising Sun past visiting and fourth-seeded Joppatowne in a state 1A North regional semifinal game. Rising Sun will meet Hereford at 9 a.m. at Dundalk CC for the regional championship.

Randy Hill went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Rising Sun. Sam Button and Chuck Macek each drove in two runs for Joppatowne.
