Woman, 58, killed in U.S. 29 collision

May 19, 1994

A 58-year-old Columbia woman was killed yesterday morning when her car crossed a median and struck a van head-on in Oakland Mills, just east of U.S. 29, Howard County police said.

Police said that about 8 a.m. Susan Delores Hawkins, of the 7300 block of Kerry Hill Court, was driving her 1983 Chrysler New Yorker east on Brokenland Parkway when the vehicle jumped the curb. The car rolled across the grass median and crashed into a westbound Plymouth Voyager, said Cpl. Fred von Briesen, of the police department's Traffic Enforcement Section.

A state police MedEvac helicopter flew Ms. Hawkins to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour after the accident. She was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Police officers directed traffic from the eastbound lanes of Brokenland Parkway onto U.S. 29.

The occupants of the van -- Amanda Cheong, 33, of the 6400 block of Pound Apple Court in Columbia, and her daughter Kristin, 5 -- were treated and released from Howard County General Hospital. Police said Ms. Cheong was wearing a seat belt, and her daughter was secured in a child safety seat.

The accident is under investigation, police said.
