A 17-year-old Landsdowne youth was ordered held without bail yesterday in the slaying of a 19-year-old Glen Burnie man, Anne Arundel County police said.

Police said they believe a dispute over a woman led Mark Anthony Wheelton of the 3200 block of Gorham Court to shoot Arthur Raymond Childress IV once in the head with a .25-caliber handgun.

Mr. Wheelton has been charged with first-degree murder and using a handgun, police Sgt. Bob Johnson said.

About 11 p.m. Monday, police answered a call concerning a man slumped in a car. When they arrived at Hammerlee Road and Sunset Drive, they found Mr. Childress, of the 1200 block of Montgomery Drive, sitting behind the wheel of a blue Chevrolet Geo Metro, they said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sergeant Johnson said police also recovered a handgun.

A witness led them to Mr. Wheelton, who was arrested at his home about 7:10 a.m. yesterday, police said.

Mr. Childress' girlfriend once was Mr. Wheelton's girlfriend, police said, speculating that Mr. Wheelton had been at the intersection when Mr. Childress dropped off the girl.

Sergeant Johnson said a homicide detective described the encounter as a "chance meeting" and said there was no indication Mr. Wheelton had been stalking Mr. Childress.

A witness told police Mr. Childress and Mr. Wheelton argued over the girl. Police said the argument escalated until Mr. Wheelton pulled the handgun and shot Mr. Childress.
