Cincinnati Reds -- Recalled P Tim Fortugno from Double-A Chattanooga. Transferred P Tom Browning from the 15- to the 60-day DL. Claimed OF William Pennyfeather from the Pittsburgh Pirates and optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis. Signed P Rick Reed to a free-agent contract with Indianapolis.

Cleveland Indians -- Purchased the contract of former Orioles IF Rene Gonzales from Triple-A Charlotte. Optioned P Chad Ogea to Charlotte. Designated P Tom Kramer for assignment.

Montreal Expos -- Purchased the contract of former Orioles IF Juan Bell from Triple-A Ottawa. Optioned OF Rondell White to Ottawa.

New York Mets -- Activated P Mike Maddux from the 15-day DL. Optioned OF Jeromy Burnitz to Triple-A Norfolk.

Oakland Athletics -- Placed OF Rickey Henderson on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 10. Recalled P Mark Acre from Triple-A Tacoma.

San Diego Padres -- Recalled C Brian Johnson from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Texas Rangers -- Activated 3B Dean Palmer from the 15-day DL. Placed former Orioles 2B Bill Ripken on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 10.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Signed P Dave Righetti to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Double-A Knoxville. Sent SS Alex Gonzalez on a 20-day rehabilitation assignment to Triple-A Syracuse.

=1 Los Angeles Lakers -- Named Del Harris coach.

College

Alfred -- Announced the resignation of Kevin Jones, men's basketball coach, so he can become manager of basketball programs for NBA Europe.

Christian Heritage -- Announced the resignation of Swen Nater, men's basketball coach.

Coppin State -- DH Adrian Price, the leading hitter in Division I baseball with a .488 average, was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year. IF Irvin Johnson was named to the All-MEAC baseball team.

Loyola -- Tricia Grant, Tara Kramer and Gina Roberts (Severna Park) were named to the All-South Region first team by the Brine/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association All-America committee. Erika Mawhorr (Severna Park), Linda Ohrin (Mount Hebron) and Michele Meyer (Broadneck) were named to the second team.

Maryland -- 2B Chris Cannan and IF/OF Fella Dolby were named to the Home Plate Club of Washington's All-Metropolitan Baseball Team.

Morgan State -- IF/C Vickie Kelson, who batted .365 with 25 RBIs in 29 softball games, was named MEAC Rookie of the Year.

Navy -- 1B Marcus Lee, OF Steve Mauro, P Toby Moore and OF Brian Bernth were named to the Home Plate Club of Washington's All-Metropolitan Baseball Team.

UMES -- OF Ricky Farley (Mervo) was named to the All-MEAC baseball team. IF Vonny Byrd and DH Robin Pettit were named to All-MEAC softball team.

UNLV -- Named Darwin Cook men's assistant basketball coach.

Wisconsin -- Extended the contract of Stu Jackson, men's basketball coach, one year through 1998.

Atlanta Falcons -- Released DE/LB Huey Richardson. Signed LB Niko Noga, LB Cedric Figaro and WR Lonnie Turner.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Waived OL Tom Rayam, LB John Brantley, WR Lee Harris and DB Dan Stowers.
