Hammonds put on DL after he injures knee

May 11, 1994|By Tom Keegan

Jeffrey Hammonds, suffering from a knee injury, was placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 4 after the Orioles' 6-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays last night.

His right knee will undergo tests today, when the Orioles will get a better idea how long Hammonds will be sidelined.

"We don't know the extent of how bad it is," Orioles manager Johnny Oates said. "Further examinations will tell us how serious it is."

Hammonds first injured the knee while hitting in the indoor batting cages Saturday, but it did not swell up until yesterday.

Hammonds had recovered sufficiently from post-concussion syndrome to play for the first time in a week, but was sidelined by the knee injury, Oates said.

"This reminds of Ben McDonald when he first came up," Oates said. "He wanted to be out there so badly but he just couldn't stay healthy long enough to stay out there. This is the same way."
