Boston Red Sox -- Placed IF John Valentin on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 4. Recalled P Gar Finnvold from Triple-A Pawtucket. Announced that P Glenn Carter has been promoted from Double-A New Britain to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Colorado Rockies -- Activated P Kent Bottenfield from the disabled list; optioned IF Vinnie Castilla to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Recalled P Mike Ignasiak from Triple-A New Orleans; optioned OF Matt Mieske to New Orleans.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Placed P Ben Rivera on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 6, with a strained right shoulder; recalled P Mike Williams from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Basketball

Seattle SuperSonics -- Announced that G Ricky Pierce had signed a one-year contract extension in January.

Centennial Conference -- Western Maryland won six spots on the 1994 All-Centennial Conference softball team. Senior Marilyn Naas and Muhlenberg junior Leslie Korkgy shared Pitcher of the Year honors. Other Western Maryland first team selects included: C Jen Prowinski, OF Carolyn Kelsey, DH Jenny Stewart. Second-team players were 1B Keli Bowen and 2B Sarah Kephart.

Alabama-Birmingham -- Named Steve Mitchell assistant athletic director.

Massachusetts -- Named Megan Donnelly field hockey coach.

Newberry -- Announced the resignation of Tom Renedo Jr., sports information director.

Stonehill -- Announced it will not renew the contract of baseball coach Lou Colitti.

Texas A & M -- Named Charlie Hatfield women's assistant soccer coach.

Utah State -- Named Kermit Davis Jr. men's assistant basketball coach.

Arizona Cardinals -- Released QB Eduardo Gonzalez and RB Mario Brunson.
