DAVIDSONVILLE — Harwood man missing; car found near river

DAVIDSONVILLE -- Police searched unsuccessfully yesterday for a 67-year-old Harwood man after finding his car and cane near the Patuxent River in Davidsonville.

An officer with the Maryland Natural Resources Police noticed William E. Johnson's car about noon along Governor's Bridge Road near the Governor's Bridge, said Nancy Howard, a department spokeswoman. Mr. Johnson's cane was discovered on the bridge, which crosses the Patuxent River.

The search was to resume today.

Police say light rail being used for crime


FERNDALE -- County police arrested three men Friday night in a crackdown on people they say use the light rail system to reach the northern part of the county to commit crimes.

Police said a surge in crimes around the train stations led authorities to launch Light Rail Initiative, an effort by four officers to curb the influx of criminals.

About 8 p.m. Friday, police said, they arrested Anthony White, 35, of the 2600 block of Round Road in Baltimore, as he was boarding a train in Ferndale, and charged him in the theft of 15 men's shirts valued at $268 from the Caldor store in Cromwell Fields Shopping Center.

About 7 p.m., police said, they arrested James Coley, 41, of Baltimore, and charged him in the theft of $65 worth of Tylenol and Advil from the Giant Food store in the same shopping center.

About 11:15 p.m. Friday, police arrested a 20-year-old Brooklyn Park man at the North Linthicum station on drug charges. Travis Armendariz, of the 300 block of Elizabeth Ave., was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Elkton man killed in truck accident


ELKTON -- An Elkton man in the passenger seat of a pickup truck was killed late Saturday after his son drove through a red light, struck a car and slammed into a utility pole, police said yesterday.

David Allen Elmer, 23, was driving a 1993 Dodge pickup truck along Newark Avenue and went through a red light at Blue Ball Road, police said. Mr. Elmer's truck hit a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Karen Bolender, 25, then ran into a light pole, police said.

His father, Richard Allen Elmer, 43, was killed in the crash. David Elmer was listed in fair condition at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del. Ms. Bolender was in fair condition at Union Hospital in Elkton. Her passenger, Kevin Desmond, 29, was treated for minor injuries.
