* Applications are now being accepted for the pilot day care center which will open in September at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Westminster, it was announced by the Carroll County Committee for the Day Care of Children. Due to the lack of public funds for day care centers, and the tremendous need for such programs in the county, the committee members came together last November to plan the pilot program. -- Democratic Advocate, April 21, 1969

* The announcement of an increase in charges and a contraction of the "free zone" by the C. and P. Telephone Co. will doubtless be met with general censure and disapproval by all classes of users. For Union Bridge exchange, all messages to Westminster, Hampstead and Taneytown will be subject to toll charges after May 1. . . . Let us hope that it will not be without its silver lining and have the effect of weeding out much unnecessary talk and save operators the annoyance of repeating many times during the day "line is busy." -- Union Bridge Pilot, April 18, 1919.

* The big snow of last week was turned to good account by Mr. Benton S. Flater, on the Rinchart farm. He filled his ice house with 50 loads of frozen vapor and in the absence of Coxey's army, employed the various members of his family, as well as some of the neighbors, as a tramping brigade, who were successful in solidifying the mass. They are hopeful that it will possess enough staying qualities to enable them to get sufficient comfort from it to pay them for their fun and labor. An ice house filled on the 12th of April is certainly a rare occurrence in his favored section of the country. -- American Sentinel, April 21, 1894.
