American League -- OF Joe Carter of the Toronto Blue Jays was named Player of the Month. P Ben McDonald of the Orioles was named Pitcher of the Month.

National League -- OF Gary Sheffield of the Florida Marlins was named Player of the Week.

Orioles -- Activated SS Manny Alexander and assigned him to Triple-A Rochester.

Chicago Cubs -- Placed OF Willie Wilson on the 15-day DL. Recalled OF Kevin Roberson from Triple-A Iowa.

Cincinnati Reds -- Recalled P Kevin Jarvis from Triple-A Indianapolis. Optioned IF Willie Greene to Indianapolis.

Detroit Tigers -- Announced that Joe Sparks resigned as manager of Triple-A Toledo and named Larry Parrish to replace him.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Acquired P Jeff Williams on waivers from the Seattle Mariners and assigned him to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Basketball

NBA -- Suspended without pay G Keith Askins of the Miami Heat for three games, F Douglas Edwards of the Atlanta Hawks for two games and F Grant Long of Miami for one game and fined Askins $15,000, Edwards $10,000 and Long $10,000 for their actions during Game 2 of their Eastern Conference playoff series Saturday. Fined F Danny Manning, F Adam Keefe, G/F Stacey Augmon, F Andrew Lang, F Paul Graham and G Ennis Whatley of the Hawks and G/F Willie Burton, C Matt Geiger, F/C Alec Kessler, G Harold Miner, F John Salley and G Brian Shaw of the Heat $2,500 for leaving the bench area during the incident. Suspended F Dennis Rodman of the San Antonio Spurs for one game without pay and fined him $10,000 for his actions during Saturday's Western Conference playoff game against the Utah Jazz.

Big Sky Conference -- Named Idaho State No. 1 singles player Mike Castrilli (Baltimore) Most Valuable Player for third straight year, first in league history.

Big South Conference -- Named UMBC junior Kevin Loewe (Perry Hall) co-Pitcher of the Week with Radford's Jim Abbott.

Patriot League -- Named Navy 3B Andy Payne (Fort Washington/Friendly High) Player of the Week.

Atlantic Coast Conference -- Named Virginia sophomore A Tim Whiteley (St. Paul's) men's lacrosse Player of the Week.

Chicago State -- Named former Chicago Bulls G Craig Hodges basketball coach.

Hagerstown Junior College -- Sophomore F Bernard Hopkins (Overlea) was named to the second team NJCAA All-America basketball team.

Marquette -- Announced the change of its nickname from Warriors to Golden Eagles.

Northeastern -- Named Dave Leitao basketball coach.

Purdue -- Junior F Glenn Robinson announced he will apply for the NBA draft.

Xavier (Ohio) -- Named former Loyola (Md.) assistants Jeff Battle, Mark Schmidt and Dave Wojcik assistant basketball coaches.

Football

Kansas City Chiefs -- Signed QB Steve Bono to a two-year contract. Signed DE Vaughn Booker, who had been with the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers for the last two seasons. Signed 10 rookie free agents: WR Michael Stephens, OL Robert Gaddy, OL Bret Kwarta, OL Emerson Martin, DL Dunstan Alexander, DL Larry Boyd, LB Ken Alexander, LB Jerry Freese, DB Monty Grow and DB Brian Randall.

Houston Oilers -- Restructured the contract of QB Cody Carlson.

Los Angeles Raiders -- Signed TE Jamie Williams.

New York Giants -- Signed RB Leon Brown.

New York Jets -- Re-signed C Jim Sweeney and QB Browning Nagle.

San Diego Chargers -- Signed S Stanley Richard and WR Shawn Jefferson to one-year contracts.

CFL Colts -- Signed WR Shannon Culver and OT Diego London.
