Arbutus man dies when car hits pole

A 26-year-old Arbutus man was killed Sunday night when the car he was riding in ran off Mountain Road near Powhatan Village and struck a traffic sign and telephone pole, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday.

The impact of the collision crushed the passenger side of the car, killing Mark A. Uhlig of the 1700 block of Selma Ave. Mr. Uhlig was pronounced dead at the scene.

Melissa Ann Kramp, 25, the driver, was charged with driving while intoxicated after a test showed her blood alcohol level was .15, the legal standard for intoxication in Maryland. She was injured but refused treatment, police said.

According to police, Ms. Kramp was driving east on Mountain Road near Caldwell Road when she lost control of the car. The car went off the road, struck a traffic sign and slammed sideways into a utility pole.

Pasadena man arrested on PCP drug charges

County police arrested a Pasadena man in the parking lot of Sunset Elementary School on Thursday and charged him possession of PCP.

James William Doak, 31, of the 7700 block of Catherine Ave. also was charged with possession with intent to distribute PCP, possession with intent to distribute PCP within 1,000 feet of a public elementary school, and possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia to pack, conceal or store PCP, police said.

A county officer saw Mr. Doak's 1974 Ford truck weave repeatedly across the center line as it traveled west on Fort Smallwood Road near the Pine Grove Shopping Center shortly after 12:30 a.m. When Mr. Doak made a sharp right turn into the parking lot of the school in the 8500 block of Fort Smallwood Road, the officer followed him.

Mr. Doak jumped out of his truck and tried to run away, police said. He had a film canister containing suspected PCP, a butane lighter and two packages of cigarette rolling papers on him, police said.

Police also found four plastic bags of suspected PCP in his truck.

The street value of the drugs was $110 and the amount seized came to just under 9 grams, police said.

Mr. Doak also faces traffic charges for driving on a suspended license, police said.
