Age: 17

Maya has served as class president since she was a freshman. She has been a Student Government Association representative and is a National Honor Society member. She is a longtime member of the school's Black Student Achievement Club.

Maya has attended several research-oriented programs, including a National Institutes of Health-sponsored summer enrichment program at Hood College, a University of Maryland School of Pharmacy apprenticeship program and a NASA apprenticeship program.

Maya recently placed in the top 5 percent of her class and has been listed as a Commended National Negro Merit Scholar. She also has taken part in the Summer Oncology Research program sponsored by the Howard University Cancer Center.

Maya has been awarded letters in indoor and outdoor track. She is a musician and played viola in the Howard County Orchestra.

She also is an artist. She won the gold medal at the 1992 NAACP Act-So competition and was selected to participate in the national competition in Tennessee. She plans to enter this month's National Association for the Advancement of Colored People talent contest as well.

Maya is a semifinalist in the Coca-Cola Scholarship competition and won a $500 scholarship from Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She also won a $2,000 scholarship from the Princeton, N.J.-based College Scholarship Services and was named as a University of Maryland Baltimore County Meyerhoff Scholar, an award that pays for four years of tuition, room and board. She was named a finalist in the National Science Scholar program, sponsored by the state Department of Education.

Plans: She wants to major in pharmaceutical medicine.

Her comments: She talks about her interest in science. "In 10th grade, I took a chemistry gifted and talented class, and I really liked it," she said. "It's the research, the experimenting, getting the problem solved."
